DAY 3 - WONDERFUL
EUCUMBENE |
Can you imagine a man-made lake which holds nine times as
much water as Sydney Harbour? Seeing is believing and today we
do just that with a look at some of the highlights of Lake Eucumbene,
one of the main water storage's feeding the irrigation farms
of the Murray and Murrumbidgee. First we visit the Hydro Electric Information Centre
for an overview of the Australian Landmark infrastructure project
then travel west to the northern extremity of the Kosciuszko
National Park and the lovely village of Adaminaby. After morning
tea under the watchful eye of the Big
Trout its on to Providence Portal and a demonstration of
water power. It's here that the rushing diverted waters pour
out of the mountain tunnels to feed Lake Eucumbene. We will pause
to see where the old village of Adaminaby was located before
it was drowned by the rising waters. Then it's on to friendly
Happy Valley
to meet the Locker family and enjoy a tasty luncheon and a real
Snowy Mountains welcome in the big slab barn. You will see the
largest Cobb & Co coach ever built plus lots of other interesting
items of memorabilia dating back to when the bushrangers held
up the place in 1865. the Lockers can vouch for its authenticity.
They are the fifth generation of the family that has owned the
property since the 1840s. On our return journey we pass over
the rock and earth wall of Eucumbene
Dam. At the time of its construction it was the largest
in the southern hemisphere. It's a delightful spot to enjoy afternoon
tea.
Today the adventure of the snowfields. We travel via the attractive
sub-alpine villages of Berridale and Jindabyne
up the Apline Way through the Kosciuszko National park to the
enchanting alpine village of Thredbo.
We will take time to soak up the atmosphere of this world famous
resort, pausing for morning tea. If you wish to pay the modest
charge for a chair-lift ride to the Eagles Nest restaurant high
above the village. It's a real buzz! On our return journey we
stop at the enchanting Crackenback
Cottage for lunch and may also wish to get lost........!
in the largest maze in the Southern Hemisphere or hand feed the
animals and meet the three little pigs. Then its on to Charlottes Pass Village and the "Roof
of Australia'', the nation's highest roadway and the closest
you can get the summit of Mt
Kosciuszko without donning your hiking boots. On our
return down the mountain we pause to view Perisher Blue which
is Australia's largest ski resort. Next stop Smiggins Holes,
another famous winter playground. Our snowfields tour programme
will include a visit to the National Park Headquarters at Jindabyne
for a presentation and short film on this wonderful area.
This will be a good opportunity to pick up souvenirs and gifts.
A leisurely start to a wonderful day. Our first destination
is the charming Past
Times Country Craft Centre and Historic Travellers
Rest Inn. The tiny chapel with its heavenly ceiling of suspended
wildflowers is gorgeous. The wood cobbled paving is a delight.
And the weavers and knitters will think they have found paradise.
We will enjoy morning tea in the conservatory and then spectacular
views of the Snowy Mountains as we travel to the Snowy River
for a wonderful luncheon on our last day touring together! It will be a relaxed journey back to the Motor Lodge
via the tiny village of Dalgety.
Nearly a hundred years ago it was one of the leading contenders
as a site for the National Capital! Be prepared for a surprise
visit to one of the region's best attractions, before having
plenty of time to get ready for our PARTY
NIGHT! Yes, tonight at the Lodge restaurant it's music,
merriment and laughter as we celebrate the friendships we have
made and the fun we have enjoyed during the Snowy Mountains stay.
Another hearty breakfast and we say farewell to our hosts
